The yearly pilgrim season at Sabarimala begins in the
months November and December on the Mandalakala season. It is entailed by the
Makaravilakku during the months of December-January. Pilgrims from the
neighboring states of Andhra and Tamil Nadu every year throng the temple to
show an observance to the shrine of Lord Ayyappan. Devotees from abroad like Russia , US and many countries of Europe also visit this huge assembly of humanity at
Sabarimala during the festive season. While going to Sabarimala, the place
where tourists halt is called Pamba. From there the pilgrims make their way
through the hills under the leadership of a Guru Swamy, senior member of the
group who presides over the journey to Sabarimala. The hill shrine is caressed
by the frolicking river Pamba amidst dense and luxuriant foliage. There is a
trekking route also which is availed by trekkers. It is a strenuous route of 45
km nearly though the dense forest and hills through a place called Erumali. One
of the major festivals at Erumali is Petta Thullal. During that festival the
religious folks paint their faces with different colors and dance with the
accompaniment of wooden sticks. There is a canal en route to Sabarimala called
Perur Thodu, where according to folklores; Lord Ayyappan took rest while
fighting a duel with the demon Mahishi. Lord Ayyappan’s garden is called Poongavanam
which is also a delight for the tourists to see. Another important point in the
trekking route is Kalaketti. Trekkers
before embarking on their journey break coconut and burn camphor to offer to
the god. Traditional tourists particularly those with a spiritual inclination
take a holy dip in the river Pamba, after which they start for the sanctum of
the divine figure. It is an exceptional pilgrimage to Sabarimala in the sense
that every year it draws millions of tourists to the shrine not only inland but
overseas. Every year the number of devouts is increasing who take immense
vehicular strain to pay obeisance to their worshipped god Ayyappan.
