One among the three major shrines of lord Vishnu renovated during the period of Nayaka Kingdom is the Sri Sarangapani temple.  This temple has the biggest Gopuram, one holy tank and five Praharas.  Second biggest Vaishnavite temple in Kumbakonam town is the Chakkarapani Temple near the river Cauvery.  Dedicated to Kumheshwara the Kambaharesvarar Temple is 8 Km away from Kumbhakonam.  Dedicated to God Rama and Sita is the Ramaswamy temple of Kumbhakonam.  Near to the Mahamaham Tank with Shiva Avatar Kasi Viswanathar and Visalakshi as the main Deity is the Kasi Viswanathar Temple.

Dedicated to God Vishnu is the Sarangapani Temple which is the tallest temple tower in south Asia.  Resembling the architectural style of the Dravidian Architecture of 13th Century of the Chola period is the Someshwar Temple.  An instance of the 12th Century Chola Architecture is the Airavateshwarar temple, 4 km west of Kumbakonam.  On the Sarangapani street in Kumbhakonam is the house of the famous mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan.  Revered in to a museum, the house showcases manuscripts, notebooks, artifacts and materials in memory of this great genius of India. An important bathing Ghat that is found in the heart of this temple town is the Bhagavath Padithurai Ghat.  Venkatachalapathy, the prime deity can be seen in the standing posture facing east with his consort Bhoomidevi in the Venkatachalapathy Swamy Temple, 5 Km from the heart of the city.  Kumbakonam is also famous for silk products, brass and metal wares and for aesthetically carved Panchaloha idols.
