Far from
the madding crowd of the urban life, Pondicherry
or Puducherry is a township tucked on the southern coast of the Coromondal
coast. It has an alluring coastline that
stretches for about 32 km bordered by palm trees. The beach is abounding with
resorts, scuba diving escorts, backwaters and many other recreational
amenities. There is the famous Aurobindo ashram which draws tourists from all
parts of the world. The French boulevard in which there is also in
international city of Auroville
is located is the main attraction and a site of immense historical
significance.
The instantly recognizable French association,
the tree lined concourse, the quaint colonial heritage edifices, the spiritual
landscape, the continuous stretch of virgin beaches, backwater, an array of
restaurants that serve a mélange of cuisines, provide an exciting mix that draw
voyagers from near and far. Pondicherry is a Union
Territory which includes
four coastal areas namely Yanam, Karaikal, Puducherry and Mahe. Karaikal and Pondicherry are situated along the East Coasts
of Tamil Nadu, Mahe
at Kerala and Yanam of Andhra Pradesh. Pondicherry
the capital of the union territory lies 162 km from Chennai on the Coromondal Coast . The principal languages spoken by
the inhabitants there are Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, English and French by a
very few. The predominant religion practiced by the people of Pondy is
Hunduism. Some are Christia, Sikhs, Jains and Muslims. There are stories of
sages who have come and lived there and tried to spread the words of spiritual
solace to mankind. The innate ambience of Pondy, as it’s dotingly
called, is felt piercingly in the older part of the town bordering the seashore
becomes most evident in the oldest part of the town which flank the
seashore boulevard. Architecture of the colonial era, some of which belonging
to the 18th century, dirt free streets and some old French
institutes, domiciles and businesses centers, and
the expansive premises of the celebrated Sri Aurobindo ashram. As you
enter the thoroughfare of the ashram resplendent flowers like bougainvillea and
roses greet you as if in a bowing posture. Pondy has its own enclosure of
attractions for its tourists. Apart from
the tranquil and vast seashore that seem to caress the horizon, the settlement
prides itself for being the site of the Aurobindo Ashram, Gingee Fort,
Auroville, the large colossal temples of Kanchipuram, Chidambaram and
Thiruvannamalai, the heritage figures in the temples of Mamallapuram, and the
hauntingly scenic hill stations of Yercud and Kodaikanal.
