The bone of contention since six decades, between two countries cannot obscure the fact that Jammu & Kashmir is a “Paradise on Earth”. Majority of its area being set amidst the picturesque god gifted beauty of the Himalayas; it houses many valleys like Tawi Valley, Chenab Valley, Kashmir Valley, Sind Valley, Lidder Valley and Poonch Valley. The panoramic view of the place itself is so eye catching, that the flow of foreign as well as Indian tourists wasn’t dull even when militancy was at its highest. And now with militancy being controlled to a large extent, people throng the place to experience what Emperor Jahangir once said “That if there is a place called Heaven on Earth, It’s here, it’s here, and it’s here.”
Jammu also known as the winter capital of the state houses the famous Maa Vaishno Devi temple which is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas, spread across the country and its location at quite a high altitude doesn’t deter the 10 million devotees who assemble there every year. It’s approachable through Katra which is 45 km away from Jammu.
So also at a slightly lower altitude than the Maa Vaishno Devi Temple one can visit Amarnath Caves, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is approachable from the capital city Srinagar, through Pahalgam town. Surrounded by snowy mountains, the cave itself is covered with snow most of the time of the year. This however doesn’t stop the 7 million visitors or Yatris of the famous Amarnath Yatra commencing every year who crowd there every year to worship the natural Shiva Linga made of ice, present inside the cave. Police and CRPF personnel provide security as well as Non Profit Organizations have resting tents and food supply called Pandals provided free to the yatris. For people who can afford, helicopter services are available for both places.
And yet at a much lower altitude lies the scenic beauty of the famous Dal Lake, covering an area of 18 square kilometers. It flaunts the cultural heritage of Srinagar with the Verinag spring and famous Mughal gardens and also temples like Shankaracharya temple and Kheer Bhawani temple. Tourists also move around in the Dal Lake in Shikharas which are a cultural symbol for J&K.
